Know Your Brakes

The dedicated team at Apex Auto Tech will take care of all your braking system service and repair needs. It’s a best practice to have us inspect your brakes periodically. A good rule of thumb is driving within normal mileage limits and under average weather conditions at least once per year. However, signs of brake trouble should prompt you to schedule a visit sooner. We’re glad to share an overview of how your brakes work and the warning indicators you should watch for so that you feel confident and informed about your car. The braking system works using hydraulic force. Brake fluid that is held in the master cylinder and then smaller cylinders near the wheels travels through brake lines/hoses. The fluid pressure causes the brake caliper to move, creating contact and friction between the brake pad and the rotor/disc. The most common sign that you need brake repair is squealing. This typically means that it’s time to have us change the brake pads. They’re metallic but eventually wear thinner than the minimum safe thickness. Another concern is vibration during braking. The rotor should be smooth and evenly thick. Excessive heat can cause it to warp. You may have insufficient brake fluid if the brake pedal feels spongy underfoot. We’ll need to assess the system to see if there’s a leak in the master cylinder of a brake line. Be aware of burning smells that could point to a stuck brake caliper or engage the emergency brake, and any unexplained increases in stopping distances.
